'49 8N carb problem ...

Just rebuilt my original Marvel carburetor (my first carb rebuild).

When I start the engine, it will only start with the choke on full, and then the engine races at full throtle for about ten seconds and dies.

This is with the throttle adjustment at the idle setting.

What am I missing?

Both adjustment screws are out one turn.

Did I screw up a linkage (I THINK I got it back together the way it came off), or is something stuck?

Any and all help is apreciated.

I think you may have linkage wrong. IIRC, throtle connects to the governor which connects to the carburator. I had similar problem a while back and that was my problem. Check that out while waiting for experts to respond. They will correct me if I'm way off base. Good luck

I'm home now and got a look at my 49. The choke connects to the carburator at the lower back connection, in line with the air intake tube. The throttle connects to the governor and the governor connects to the carburator at the higher front most connection. If it's a connection problem this should get it. Good luck. Steve

Amazing how much better she runs now, too!

What a humbling experience!

Checked most of the other obvious potentials, then pulled that newly rebuilt carb back off.

Took about 15 seconds to figure out that I'd put the throttle valve in backward ...

Thanks for your help Steve.

J.
