Do these work very well and are parts available for them? I can pick up a three gang set of 30" reels (app. 7' cut) for $400. They run on rubber tires which appear to hold air. I'm told the reels need sharpening. How and where would I be able to get them sharpened? I assume they are ground driven as they drag along on the drawbar.Does this sound like a do?

I have a set.

I bought them for $50 at a school eqipment auction...what a deal.

They work great.

I got a standard 3 gang set that has the wing attachments for the 4th and 5th gang sets...but that is big to get around with. I also got about 6 extra gangs and misc. wheels.

I have a mix of steel and rubber tires. The Steel works great as long as they have some tread on them...I have welded some teeth on them to get them to grip better...they wear down.

There is not a lot of maintenance on them and they are simple.

For sharpening ask greens keeper at a local course and they can send you to somebody good.

I had to take mine to a guy.

But I have been using sharpining coumpound the past few times and it is keeping a decent edge on them.

Just don't let the grass get too long between mowings and don't mow wet grass it will clog it up and get frustating.

Does a real nice job and the 80# rollers eventually smooth out the lawn.

It has been a long time since I pulled Toro gang mowers - used to do it every day it didn't rain in the summer. They were a good quality product that needed periodic maintenance and regular use. Reel mowers do a superior job but don't handle really long cutting as well as you might like. You should be able to sharpen the blades yourself with a file, in fact I've never seen it done any other way, and they need to be lubricated regularly. There should be parts available even for the units I pulled 35 years ago, but if you have model numbers your dealer should be able to tell you for sure.

I personally like the idea of pulling them again, and have considered bidding on them a couple of times at auctions, but I will opt for a rear discharge finish mower because I know I'd let the grass get too long and end up getting frustrated.
