9N Mainshaft Problem

I have had an unusual noise in 2nd gear since I got the 1941 9N in July. I have finally split the tractor to take a look (as well as do some other repairs) and have found that the main shaft can be moved ahead & back 1/16" with the single shim removed. I was wondering if it would be acceptable mechanical practice to add a 1/16" washer between the rear bearing cone and the shoulder of the main shaft or if I should add a 1/32" washer at both ends so that the gears are more closely centered where they would have originally been. I cannot see any obvious signs of where this slop developed and can only assume that the bearing cups did not seat properly on the last repair. As always, your expert mechanical advice is appreciated.

This is only a guess, but what do the bearings look like. I would assume it's time for new bearings and cups, from the sounds of it, if there is that much play in the shaft. If you have it that far apart, now would be the time to replace those bearings and races. Good Luck!!!

I was going to replace the bearings anyway even though they are in fairly good shape. But even with the new bearings I think there is still going to be some adjustment required, I'll figure something out. Thanks again, Doug.
