Turning 50 two years ago was not so bad after finding out my wife and daughter had bougth me a restored 1939 9N. Engine had been redone and was only used for shows the past 10 years. I have put less then 4 hours on it since I have owned it. Today I heard a noise from the front of the engine that I thought was the water pump, but a very knowledge friend says it could be a rod bearing, wrist pin, or piston. The noise is not rythmatic and is louder as engine warms up. He advised me not to run the tractor. Can such a thing be repaired and what will it involve. Can it get worse? Thanks for any help. 52 now feels much older!!!! Pokey

Take your fan belt off and crank it up. If the noise is gone then you know it is the water pump. VB

Did you check for a pinhole exhaust leak? They sound like tapping sound, and would be consistant with a temperature change....start it up cold, and quickly use your hand to find the leaks...a stethascope works as well.

I hope that is what it is!

Take Care
Steve

Mine was making an unusual noise like that and turned out to be a loose sleeve. You might want to check that.
