My 6 volt '51 8N starts ok but seems to not have normal power. For example, to start up in reverse, I need the throttle lever 2/3 or more full on. First is ok, but higher gears you have to be very easy. I did not try fourth, but I am not sure I could start up in it. I seem to have to use too high rpms and too much choke. I cleaned the sediment bowl, and it did have a tiny amount of water, and of course some brown sediment. I don't know whether the next step is a carburator rebuild or replacement, or whether the governor is not working right. I need to get set for plowing snow. I can't do that with one hand holding the choke out.

Peter, I had this happen recently and I was quite concerned as I thought I was in pretty good shape. I noticed a loss of power while climbing a pretty steep little hill behind the house. Since I had recently tuned her up and changed every item listed I suspected maybe the governor??? Just because I'm lazy and cheap (and had some extras) I changed the spark plugs. Noticed the two back ones were a beautiful tan but the two front were black. UGH! Took the hill with fresh plugs without a hitch. Good Luck..... .. PJ

Check your 3 screen filters- above fuel valve under tank, screen in gasbowl, 90 degree elbow into carb. Might ck timing, too. HTH DON TX

Clean the gas tank and all three fuel filters. Clean the carburetor thoroughly with solvent and compressed air. Adjust carb to spec.Make sure your plug wires are on in correct order 1-2-4-3. Plugs and points and condensor should be be checked. Timing could be off, too. A systematic approach will eliminate each possiblity in turn.
