8N clutch sticks

I've recently purchased an 8N that had been parked in the weeds for 15 or more years. I've got it running now and it works quite well. The only problem is that the clutch sticks. It is quite difficult to predict where you will stop after stepping on the clutch, as disengagement can be delayed up to several seconds. I think the clutch is in good shape so I don't want to split the tractor if I don't have to. I'm thinking that a well aimed shot of WD40 on the splines of the input shaft might just cure the problem. This could be accomplished by removing the steering box. Has anyone had the same problem? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

RW

Rod..... ..You might want to check the "archives" at the top of the page for a lot of stuck clutch questions and answers.

I was taught clutch splines and starter drives should be greese/oil free. I think before I squirted WD-40, I'd try the "brake-kleen" cure as a power wash (use the whole can) is cheep compaired to the effort of splitting the tractor, and which does not gum things up and dries up the clutch lining from oil. Then, I'd probably use the baby powder cure and the 2X4 wooden block cure.

BTW, unlike the 9N & 2N, the 8N steering gear box is not a transmission cover.

Good Luck..... .Dell
