I recently bought an 8N. Just giving it a little tune-up before the snow flies. What is the best fluid to use in the rear hydrolics? 80/140? 90/140? For the motor oil I'm planning to use just regular 5W20 and top off the loader hydrolics with Universal Tractor Fluid.

Welcome to the board - even if the first answer you got was a bit abrupt. That happens. The archives referred to are old posts and can be searched using a box at the top of the page.

One of the better covered topics is the fluid to lubricate the tranny, rear end, and run the hydraulics. This post is very informative - maybe more than you wanted to know. - It nets out to: Use a fluid that complies with Ford spec M2C-134 particularly in our climate.

Thanks. It is a little confusing. I'm having a little trouble cutting through everything to see what the best to use is. What do you use?

I hate to even bring it up (...and yes, I did read up in the archives), as for the engine oil, detergent or non-detergent oil? I'm leaning towards the regular detergent. Seems like it would clean it out nicely. Thoughts?

For hydraulic I go right to Rochester Tractor and get New Holland M2C134D fluid - I replaced it every fall when my tractor set outside to prevent water ( which sinks to the bottom) from freezing and possibly breaking something expensive. I have everything under cover now and let it go this year - I had less than 5 hours on the 'old' fluid after finishing some major work.

For Oil I use Valvoline 5w20 in everything all year... I have no oil pressure problems I have to try to circumvent with thicker oil.

Two schools of thought:
1. HD oil will loosen up all of the old gunk in your engine and cause more problems, oil leaks, deteriorated seals, etc.
2. HD oil will keep the engine cleaner and more efficient, will last longer, has anti-foaming, anti-oxidants, lower ash content, etc.

I like the second option, but it's your tractor. Non-detergent is getting harder to find. One of the functions of oil is to remove dirt by suspending it so it can be filtered out. If a detergent makes that a more effective process, why not use it?
