I read a auction listing that has a 8N with road gear, loaded but hasn't run for 20 years. That's all it says. I looked in Central tractors catalog at a new sleeve/piston kit for $150. I would guess the old sleeves are rusted up to where they are no good. Do you think I would ever be able to get the sleeves out? Would they be rusted to the block after that long? What other things are there to watch out for a 8N that hasn't run in 20 years. I might go for it if the price is right and it hasn't set outside all that time. Thanks.

What you need to know is "is the engine stuck?" If you can turn it reasonably freely with the crank pulley nut you might have one of those "put gas in it and drive it home" deals. If it is stuck then your sleve and ring fear is likely right although I have unstuck some pretty nasty engines with lots of time and patience.

Your mileage may vary

My Grandma gave me a Farmall M that had not been run since 1975. I never touched it. A guy saw it from the road and offered my Mom $300 for it while I was in Utah in 1994. She sold it. Took the guy 2 hours with his son to have her purring. They drove it home. It is now used only for shows.

I am still not too happy with Mom ;-)

It takes a brave soul to admit such things. Sorry about the Farmall. Those are nice tractors also.

If it has been put in the dry you shouldn't have much trouble but ifs its like the one i just got done with (my grandpaw's) you could have a good deal tied up in just the motor. THis tractor sat out in the weather for 25 years so i not only had to rebuild the motor but i had to buy a block and they are kinda hard to find, kinda expensive too. So you might have $150 in it or could have up to $700-800.

i just bought a AC model B which had been setting since 1962, put gas in it and it cranked on the third try, runs perfect, hydraulics work, the waterpump leaked for a couple of days, then stopped leaking, oh, do need to put on a fan belt

Two years ago bought a 9N that supposedly set in the corner of a barn for 13 years. It looked it. Tires sunk into the dirt, entire tractor covered with a film of rust, with a thick coating of dust on that. Fresh gas, checked oil, new battery and it started up. Still runs with no smoking or oil consumption. Oil pressure is good, too. I would at least check the 8N out. With these little machines you never know.

I have been debating whether or not I will let myself be given a 2N that had the engine rebuilt by my brother in law 27 years ago, failed to start, and has set outside the whole time since. It too has a Sherman, the useless OD variety. The sleeves can be rusted in place, the crank can be pitted, the flywheel and clutch are probably near permanently welded together with rust, the tires have to be junk and the crud that collects in the bottom of the various sumps is probably concrete by now. The water pump will be shot, the generator frozen, and the gas tank full of pinholes. I don't think I can afford to let someone be so nice as to give it to me. I know I'd never buy anything like that.

You may be surprised at an engine that hasn't started in so long. Mine had not run in at least 7 years, most likely 10. It had the front end exposed and the oil pan off. It was out in the open exposed to eastern Colorado winds and blizzards. I sprayed the heck out of it with slick stuff, put it back together and put oil in each cylinder, let it set for a few days and started it. Been running fine for 3 years now.

Someone had a good checklist for how to try and start an engine that had set for so long.

I'd sure give it a shot if the price was right.
