The serial number is located on the left side of the transmission housing, above and to the rear of the starter or directly below the starter, (depending on model) on a 3"x 6" horizontal flat. The serial number is hand-stamped onto the horizontal flat, not cast into the transmission housing. Format is model designation above or below sequential production number.

Paul's info is correct for the early 2000. I looked at a '75 2000 not long ago and the sn was on the right side. So it depends on how old a 2000 you're looking at.

My 2000 is a '74 and the 2 serial numbers are on the right side looking from the seat. FWIW: some of the 2000's were made in Basildon England, which will give you a serial number that's different than the US tractors. My $.02
