Ok, after a lot of searching, I have thouroughly confused myself. Did 8N's come with front bumpers when they were new? Most of the ones I see in my area have them, but a lot of the pictures I see dont have them. Mine has a front bumper on it, but I dont think they have the right bolts holding it on, if it's even mounted in the right holes. Do the bumpers mount in the holes for adjusting the front axle width?

Thanks,

68 Mag

One thoughtput the nuts on the front this way if you need to remove the bumper to clean the radiator you just remove the nuts then the bumper. This way there is no jacking ect.

Bumpers were a dealer-installed option. Here's a picture of both an original and probably the most common repro model:

Most folks will argue vehemently that a bumper must have the curved mounting arms to be "correct." However, here is a scan of a 1951 Parts and Accessories manual that lists the bumper and you will note that the mounting arms are NOT curved.

So, if this is from a 1951 Ford Dearborn parts manual, it would seem to indicate that a "correct, original" bumper does not have to have the curved arms, but you'll most likely start fights with this info if you take it to a Ford tractor show..... ..LOL!!

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed

Not to argue the point but in all my years working with and around 8N's I have never stumbled across an original "straight" bumper. I still have the original bumper off my Dad's 1950 8N mounted on my 51 8N which I had personally removed before we traded the 1950 on a new 960 (which I still do have). I also have the same type bumper on a 51 8N that my Uncle had since new. Both of these were of the curved style and I can certify their origion! One possible explanation of your photo may be since parts were distributed by seven independant S-F distributors is that maybe, somewhere, one may have sold a straight one. Another possibility is that the advertising group at Ford was sometimes far removed from reality, often file photos were used and simply the wrong photo may have appeared in the parts book.

It looks to me like the one with straight arms is an "artist's rendering."

I, too, have a piece of original literature that shows that bumper with straight side arms. It seems to be a one time thing as all other brochures and literature show the curved side arms. I'm convinced the literature has a drawing rather than a photo and the artist screwed up, because like gaspump and others have stated that "original" bumper with straight side arms just didn't exist anywhere but in the sales literature. In the real world, original bumpers have curved side arms.

I have to agree with you, Gaspump. I've seen a lot of original bumpers and a lot of obvious aftermarket bumpers. But I've never seen a bumper that was old and kinda looked like the original. Seems like if that (Ed's picture) was an original factory option, one of us would have seen one somewhere.

68 Mag, They were an option that you could order with the tractor. The original style bumpers have a curve in the support arms so that the hole for the crank was supposed to line up between the bars in the bumper. Yes they bolt to the same holes that are for changing the axle width but the original bolts are too short so most people just bought longer bolts. If you plan on using the hitch for much you should have at least grade 5 bolts in there or grade 8 would be better, you should not have soft bolts in there even if the bumper is just for looks as they also hold up the tractor. My 2 cents worth Greg NE
