I'm like a kid Christmas eve. It finally snowed here in MN. I get to try out my new-to-me 8N with the snow bucket. Can hardly wait to wake up and start playing. I know this will wear off soon, so I want to enjoy it while it lasts.

Hi guys:

I am in n minnesota and we only have a couple of inches of snow. I loved it last night though with all the snow falling, wind howling and I was in the barn with my 2n and 8n. I put the chains on the 8n thanks to a nice post here on the board archives, I finally found an easier way to put the chains on - thanks guys. I have the original dearborn front mounted blade for the 8n that has the chains. My 2n has a single stage 5 foot Erskine snowblower that works great. I don't have chains on this tractor and that seems to work best because If I am spinning a bit and that is better because I want max pto and slower speed. I tried chaining up the 2n and with max speed for the pto I found that 1st gear was too fast with most snow accumulations. I have been using these rigs for about 5 years and I still haven't got tired of my winter snow removal. My driveway is about a 1/4 mile long and I haven't had to call in the big snowplows yet

Can you provide a pointer to the easier way to put on chains?

Thanks,
Jerry

Regarding putting chains on the tire, perhaps you guys already knew this but I am still learning. Anyway, make sure the hooks on the indiviudal cross chains are to the outside not facing the wheel. Take the part of the chain that does not have the fasteners and pull it over the tractor tire from back to front tucking the first cross chain under the tire. Drive forward over the chain until the fastener is axle high on the back of the tractor tire. Pull the tire chain up to the fastener (easier said than done) and hook the fastener. Note - do the inside fastener first then, the outside. Drive a short distance and then see if you can tighten the fastener another chain link or two.

Hope this helps, I did not bookmark the section in the archives but if you do a search on tire chains, you may be able to find something in the archives.

This is from last Dec 12 here in SE Michigan.
I'm not quite ready yet as I'm building a front blade for the loader.

It is a lot more fun to think about plowing snow when you are inside rather than when you are out in the cold....

So take pictures, sit by the fire, and grin!

Welllll
I guess it still came a bit too early for me.
Or did I just procrastinate too long?
I haven't finished building my front mount snow plow. It's coming along though. Got the frame mostly built and have all the hydraulics figured out.
I'm using the 3 pt to push a hyd. cylinder
which will raise and lower the plow.
This unit is going to be so neat you're all going to want one.
Gotta give credit to my neighbor here. Man is he smart!
Meanwhile, guess I'll get the shovel out...

Now that was fun. I don't think this will wear off anytime soon. We got around 9" of the wet heavy stuff. It's all I can do to keep from doing everyone's drivway on my street. I played with the bucket and the back blade. I must admit the back blade seems to work easier for me. It's the first real work out I've given my 8N since I got it a couple weeks ago. I don't know how I ever got by without it.

OK. You three are obviously experts. Do you use plow or blower? Is it difficult to mount a fairly modern snowblower on an 8N? i.e. do I have to modify the tractor? Thanks, Dan

Check the archives - last year was the first time I saw a single stage snow thrower for a cat. 1, 3-point hitch. In essence, it was a V shaped blade that moved snow to the center of the V as the tractor moves foreward. At the center of the V is an impeller driven by the PTO shaft. The snow is pushed up from the impeller and a two position fin directed the snow iher left or right. Pretty cool, but I couldn't hlp but think what would happen if one fell off the seat. Of course, one needs to be cautious whenever using the tractor.

I personally use a blade

Great photo, thanks. I want it now! Looks like it hooks right up to the PTO and three point. Anybody got an idea who made it? I've attached a photo that I found 'somewhere' on the web. The file name was "pto driven erskine".

Problem with that is you have to drive backwards - the other kind lets you drive foreward.

I've got the blade on my 8N and the blower tuned up and ready to go. But it just won't snow - there isn't even frost in the ground yet! This is very, very strange for here. I'm fully expecting to pay for this in a big way.
December's long range forecast is for above average precip. and below normal temps.

Hasn't worn thin for me in ten years here in Montana. Still enjoy getting on the Carharts and plowing the driveways here and next door.
Only six inches of valley snow here so just a tune up really.

Your mileage may vary

I know what you mean it is fun to move the snow around for a while.

But that steel seat and lack of an enclosed cab makes it a bit of a challenge after a while.

Here in Syracuse NY (191" last year) we haven't even had a trace. I have not put on my field chains or my blade yet since there is no snow in our 7-10 day forecast.

Still, I can't wait to plow a few times.

This year I now have a rear utility light...that will be great for the short days!
