8N Wants to Quit

Well I had a lot of fun plowing out today. Although there were some fustrating moments getting the hand of it (looks like Joel B. got a little fustrated too). So after working it pretty hard this morning (the first time I've really worked it since I got it), tonight I went out and cleaned up a few more new inches of the really wet heavy stuff.

This time after about 3 swipes down the 1/6 mile driveway, she wanted to quit. Started sputtering and would just about die unless I pushed in the clutch. Then after a minute of pushing in the clutch every 10 seconds on my way back to the barn, I needed to pull the choke all the way out just to keep her going. Finally got her back in the barn. Looking for ideas on what it might be. I'm thinking spark plugs. Sounds a little like the "Ford 8N Running rough and backfiring" posts a few down.

8N, side distributor, 12 volt. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the great reponses. Got a few things to check on. If it was the fuel, why wouldn't it act up when it first runs? I tried it again today, same thing. After it warms up it wants to quit. How does the coil effect it after it warms up?

Alan, My 51 8N started the sputtering thing when it was worked. I went through the fuel system to no avail. Ran great at first but when worked it started to sputter. Pulling the choke would get me back to the shed. I had replace everything in the ignition system but the old coil (which looked like it could have been original). I put a new 12V coil in and got rid of the dropping resistor and got rid of my rough running problem after working hard. It'll work all day without a missed beat now.

On my 2N last year, snow got on the radiator, melted, blew onto distributor, caused rough run.

Opened up the dist. and dried it out with a hair dryer and it ran fine.

fuel problems-water or
fuel problems sediment in bowl or carb

If this is the first time you have used the tractor for an extended period it may be that some sediment clogging a jet part way. Pulling out the choke inceases the vaccum in the carb and thus more fuel can be pulled through a partially clogged fuel system.

Also, check the fuel tank for crud. I you were boppin' about maybe some gunk got stirred up.

Check on the water first though. It is most by far the easiest thing to check.

Could be moisture in fuel that is freezing at those temps. Had a slush ball in my glass fuel filter bowl, which made mine act like that last year.
