when i brought my tractor i was told it was a 47 8N. after i checked the ser.# i believe its a 51

ser.# 8N401338 NF 81 whats the N stand for
F is for Feb. 8 date and 1 for 51

From all the historical research Ford just gave the letter "N" for tractor. Nothing more to it than that N=tractor

Model 1948 Tractor = 8N

Model T=car
Model A=first car
8N=1948 Tractor

I 'm pickin up what your layin down...

I have no idea what the 'N' you are referring to stands for.
As far as I understand the date codes, there is supposed to only be one letter signifying the month.

Can you post a pic???

Reread the original post.
Pretty sure that the question is about the Casting Date Code and why it has 2 letters in it instead of one.

NOT the 8N and what that stands for...

Sorta. Actually it is the beginning year of that model. 9N 1939-1941, 2N 1942-1947, 8N 1948-1952.

someone wrong here the first 8N came out July 7, 1947. the reason that stick in my head is July 7 is my birthday and i pretty close to the yr.

Sounds right. Built in 1947 for 1948 model year. Probably released to the public around July 1947.
Most new cars have traditionally been introduced in September of the year prior to the model year.

the numbers signify the years first sold. the n simply was a designation for ford. 9n=1939 2n=1942 8n=1948.
