Alright, got over the no start weekend and checked some posts from today. I was reading about the resistor, and someone mentioned he got a year out of a coil without the resistor.
I bypassed the resistor and tried to start the tractor. The tractor fired right up for about 5 seconds - black smoke out the behind. I was thrilled for 5 seconds. Then something popped.
Now the starter spins but nothing happens up front. I took off the coil and dist cap. Holding the coil and cap in my hand, I get sparks from the little spring thing. So I take it I didn't blow the coil. Or did I?
Did I just blow the condensor?
I'll be near my favorite tractor parts store on my travels this week but I am not sure what to purchase. It's now dark and I can't work on the tractor till at least Thursday.
Please help. By the way it's a 41 9N Front Distributor.

On 11/30 I asked what the voltage read at the top of the coil as points make and break. Your answer was you didn't have a meter. If'n I were you and going shopping I would take a picture of Pres. Jackson to Radio Shack or even Wally World and turn it in for a fair quality multi meter. Either that or you can start throwing parts at it and sooner or later you will fix it like a dealer mechanic.

YOur mileage may vary

Paul..... .that little spark you get from the springy thingy is battery volts and not sparkie volts, you'll know the difference (grin). But just cause you get a battery sparkie doesn't mean you'll get enuff sparkies to run your engine. Generally speaking, condensers are bullet proof. By-passing your resistor and finding out the engine will run is indicative of low sparkies. I'd guess at this time, you really do have a bad frontmount ignition coil, based on your latest report.

When you say "the starter spins but nothing happens up front" just exactly what are you saying? Are you saying "I hear the starter turn but I don't see the fan blade turning?", If'n this is the case, you've most likely "popped" your starter bendix. Replace it with the improved "clutch" starter drive.

But honestly, I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife..... ...Dell

I checked this morning before I left. The starter is spinning but not the fan.
All those jump starts this weekend must have been tough on the starter.
Where do I get a clutch type starter?
How much to just rebuild this one?

new points. now could have fried them now that you bypassed the resistor. pickup several sets as spares. pick up new condensor, and new coil.

do you have a 6V or 12 v system?

if 12 v get two resistors and install them in series. dell can tell you the kind to get.

pickup a carb rebuild kit.

Bypass the resistor? why are you doing that to yourelf? some coils are just plain bad and bypasing the stepdown resistor doesn't help matters, you, or your tractor. You are adding an element of guesswork to your problem. hook up your electrical system coorectly and avoid second guessing what's wrong knowing that somethin is not correct it adds to the confusion. start with a clean slate on the electrical then fine tune it as you make progress sounds like a timing problem when it pops and dies. do you have your plug wires on the correct cylinder? firing order 1-2-4-3. same thing happened when i had my NAA and i had the wires in 1-2-3-4 until i saw my glaring error!

"Starter spins" as in it turns over but the engine does NOT. OR the starter and engine turn over but you get no apparent firing of any of the cylinders.

You need to be clearer in you descriptions of what happens. Write it and then let it sit several minutes while you do something else. Then when you reread it you may catch something that could be told better.

Regards,
Larry

sorry about the confusion.
I hear the starter working and the engine turning over but no firing of the cylinders.

Did it run at a reasonble speed or rather fast?
I had same situation after starting with throttle
stuck open. It ran like crazy for a few seconds
and stopped with a pop, not a crash. Turns out
the spark advance mechanism bit the dust, so the
spark was was way out of time, hence no start.
after repairing the distributor it runs fine.

Sounded like a cat purrin- just right then nothin but the sound of the starter spinning the motor.

How fast is it spinning? I had all the valves stick open on one. The starter spun the engine with no effort. You should be able to tell if the starter is being loaded by the compression in the engine or not.

I really suspect a gas problem - that will shut them down and they will not start for anything! Filters can get blocked real easy. Sitting 2 years would let a lot of gunk build up in the tank.

You need to go about trouble shooting it VERY methodically. Start with the simple things like the key switch, the gas filters, etc. Don't just "throw parts" at it. Be sure the part that you are going to replace really is bad.
