It's 10:26 am. I have removed the carb, generator, and old oil pressure gauge. I have a question. I removed the exhaust manifold stud closest to the radiator by accident (the nut is stuck to it, I can fix that later). When it came out, so did water. My radiator has drained itself via this stud hole. This is ok, right? Please say I dont have a cracked block.

These are through holes and make wonderful drains when you remove them. Which also means you should put a little sealant of some sort (see archives) on them when you replace them. Also, use original type brass nuts on the studs.

Don't panic. The studs go into the water jacket.

Nope - that is suposed to happen since the stud goes throughthe water jacket - before re-nstalling go to your auto parts store and ask for the special goop that is needed for studs going through the water jacket.

Also, make sure you clean the block very well, especially around exhaust port 4. If it is scored you may want to perform additional repairs.

Thanks Ed. Ok, so I need goop. Dad has some from the Farmall...Exhaust port 4 is the one farthest from the radiator, right?

Yea - my 2N block was scored badly around #4 (closest to operator seat) - I ended up using copper permatex around the opening to make up the loss. Then I applied the gasket - you have new gaskets, right? One for the block and one for the carb.

Finished. I installed the oil gauge without any problems, and I got the gaskets installed problem- free. Now, hopefully, this will keep some smoke out of my face and maybe keep some gunk off the right side of my engine.

Congratulation!

Now is a bad time to ask, but did you paint the manifold? Mine came from the supplier in a bag and was covered with oil. It didn't have any paint on it, so I hit it with a couple coats of Rustoleum BBQ Grill Paint, which is meant for high heat applications and has worked pretty well.

Here is a picture taken last 4th of July (Eric Cartman Digitally Added) and you can see the new manifold and muffler in silver. By the way, if the smoke is bad, you might need to adjust the mix a little.

Just went for a test- drive. No more smoke in my face, and I cant really tell abut the gunk-age. No, I didnt paint the maifold yet, because all I have is gloss black spray paint, and it burns off much too quickly, I would believe. It doesnt say for a high heat application. When I tear it apart to paint it, I will be sure to paint the manifold and replace the exhaust pipe.
