Just drove the 8N after replacing parts.

Well, after replacing my oil pressure gauge and exhaust manifold gasket, I just went for a test drive around the house. It was kinda embarrassing, I still havent 'figured out' everything. Like when I accidentally knocked it into 'full throttle' when shifting into reverse...and when I spun out going into reverse...But hey, at least the new manifold gasket kept the blue smoke out of my face.

But, on a serious note, what is the lowest acceptable oil pressure for working an 8N? The last time I checked it, which was about 30 seconds into my 3 to 4 minute drive, it was 20. Is that acceptable, or should I not use it at all until I rebuild the engine?

Thanks,

68 Mag

Also, I have a hydraulic question. The 3 pt arms will not raise when the position control lever is in the vertical position, only when it's the the horizontal position. Is this wrong, or have I mis-interpreted the operators manual?

Thanks,

I think your oil pressure sounds fine - mine starts at about 30 when cold and then drops a little when it gets warm.

There seems to be a common issue with the position control disorder you described. Check the archives for a post from Zane (actually I thought I saw it on this board yesterday or the day before) regarding the diagnosis and fix.

And way to go - the tractor sure does purr when the manifold is clean bright and tight.

After reading some of these posts I'm wondering if my pressure is a little high. When I first start it up the oil pressure tops out the gauge right around 50. Any ideas about what would cause it to be so high to start out with? After it warms up, it drops to what I would guess is normal, around 15-20. Although it's hard it get it to idle for very long before she wants to climb up a little.

The oil preesure being so high might be a spring controlled pressure relief valve in the oil pump. It might loosen up a little once the engine warms up giving you the more reasonable pressure.

The idle creeping up might be a problem with your governor. The throttle isn't really attached to the carb, it is attached to the governor which in turn regulates the carb. If the idle creeps up, it may be bent or stick governor linkage.
