After researching some pictures my 8n with only 3 sspeeds and reverse looks exactly like a 8n tranny from the the square cover plate and fill plug? but they didn't make a 3 speed 8n my shifting pattern is R1

Allen,

The 9N/2N trannys have ONE top hole in the top. On top of it is the steering gear AND the shifter. The cover is CAST piece with the shifter ball socket and the bottom half of the steering gear box in it. The top of the 8N tranny has TWO holes in the top. Front one has the steering box over it and the rear has a stamped SHEET METAL cover with the shifter socket as a separate piece.

Second check. The 8N tranny will have a "cross shaft" for the left brake which is not in the 9N/2N tranny - no hole for it!

Don't think you have a 9N2N tranny. ESPECIALLY if you have an 8N rear end - just too much doesn't match to easily swap out just the tranny from an 8N to a 9N/2N.

It sounds like you may have a badly worn shifter. A common problem. Check the archives - think bg had some fixes for that problem.

HTH
Larry

You may get an additional clue from the position of the starter switch on the tranny cover. On the 4-speed, it's in the upper left corner as you sit on the tractor. I think it's in the top center on the 3-speed.

Now that I think about it, it may also be possible that you DO have a 4th gear but you can't see the "4" marked on the cover. The pattern is:

R41
_23

If you can put it between R and 1 and it goes fast, you've found 4th. Good luck!
