I had the gen checked & put on a new cutout & still no charge. The gen motors slowly when I bypass the cutout. Amp meter shows about 10V discharge when I turn on the key & about 2-3V discharge while running. When the battery is dead or gets disconnected the engine dies. had to tow it in last night cause of a dead battery.
Question is how would I check the gen. while still on the tractor besides motoring it? Is there any way to test the cutout? Any & all help will be greatly app. This no charging is going to send me to the nuthut. Can the gen. be tested with a voltmeter while running?

Rusty, I had a similar problem with my 8N/recently rebuilt generator. Slow to no motoring.
I took the endcap off and found the brush holders rusted. I dissasembled the brush holders and cleaned them with a dremel tool/sanding drum(small). I coated the holders inside with antisieze then wiped all but a slight film off.
Since then I have a perfect generator for the first time in years.

this is probably obvious but,,,,, ,,,,, did we polarize the generator after taking it off and then checking the cutout realy???? you have to polorize each time the generator is disconnected,,, just my 2 cents,, sometimes it aint worth that much, Pat

If the generator is supplying the coil with electricity, he tractor should remain running. So it seems your generator is not supplying electricity to the coil, or it is being blocked along the way. Yes, the generator can be tested with a voltmeter while the tractor is running, as can the cutout. My suspicion is that the cutout is eliminating your charge.

While I was diagnosing a similar problem with my 2N, here is what I found.

While running I had ~7 volts out of the generator and at the armature side of the cutout. On the batery side of the cutout I had ~6 volts. When I placed a jumper around the cutout and started the tractor, I had ~6 volts from generator to battery.
I had the generator rebuilt and tried a new cutout but the problem was still there.

This is why I went through three cutouts in one month. None of them charged the battery. You may recall my earlier post about installing an aftermarket voltage rgulator. Have not had a problem (knock on steel) since. E-mail if you need the regulator info.

The gen can be tested if you hook power to it. It should "motor".
