I have a 48 8N. The generator recently took a dump on me and I need to make repairs. Firstly it is a 6v volkswagon generator(previous owner mod.). I do not have the original gen or bracket. Secondly a new/rebuilt vw gen is in the same ballpark as a ford generator. I also have a GM alternator, can cut, weld, machine pretty much anything. My question is, do I convert or repair the 6v system. As far as the other components go , I have a brand spankin new 6v battery, the starter needs to be rebuilt/replaced. The motor runs and starts well( after rebuilding dist and adding a ballast resistor and replacing the coil). The tractor is not a show piece It is more or less a toy I use to move dirt and rock around my lot and grade my road. Best $500 I have ever spent, was on this tractor even though it needs a little tlc. I am planing on keeping her for a long time. Also, do your tractors have names?? Ihave a sailboat named Taloulah, and was wondering if I should name my tractor. Thanks, Andy

I love my 12v conversion, but it was already half done when I got it, and I just had to finish the wiring and get a correct 12v coil, so I'm biased...

On the name, I've always wanted to call somthing "The Anti-Christ", Trouble is, the tractor runs too good to call it that.

Just curious, why do you say the starter needs to be rebuilt?

Since you say you are mechanically handy, I'd suggest you "open it up" and check the brushes. They wear the most and will get loose so they do not make good contact with the commutator on the armature. They can be replaced. The commutator wears out next and then the bearings. After that nothing should go bad (not counting the startedrive gear/bendix) except for gross abuse. Things like getting it wet or running it so long it gets so hot the insulation on the wires starts to break down. Then most of the time what happens is that the starter just pulls so much current that it saps the battery, but it still turns the engine over as if nothing is wrong.

My bet is that if you seem to have problems with the starter, it is the brushes.

Reagrds,
Larry

Andy, I spend more time in the summer on my 8N than on my sailboat. And I seem to enjoy it. What's wrong with me? Do you have this problem?

The 12v altenator, new wiring harness, 12v coil, and Genesee pointless ignition module were the best couple hundred I invested in my 52 8N. You want trouble free operation, update! I would rather work with my 8N than work on my 8n.

Andy, if everything is maintained (clean and bright) the six volt system is all you need. As for your other question "wondering if I should name my tractor." Just click on the link below for a better answer than I could ever give. Hope this helps.

My NAA has a VW charging system (12V) I reconditioned VW's for 20 years and the parts were plentiful very good system and that variable width pully solves problems associated with the wide belts on the N's. To be honest with you I would go to original 6V first then if parts are free or dirt cheap 12V generator (any Make) and never consider alternator.
