I remember some of you fellas had pretty good luck with the oven cleaner for paint removal. What I am wondering is how long did you leave it on the painted metal and do you need to make two applications and what do you use to wash it off with other than a sprayer.Any soap or rinse.Do you wire brush it at any time...Thanks Fellas: Have a good weekend...R.M. I have found that over cleaner named "oven brite" works best for cleaning and light paint removing. I use it to clean and then wire brush loose stuff, then use ZANE'S lye stipper with good success. I leave the Zane Stuff on for a couple of hours and repaste it occassionally to keep it wet. It does a good job paint removing. You can get faster results with higher priced marine or airplane stripper. But as you can see, you have a choice. A gallon of lye stripper will do a lot of work at about $5.00 but it takes a few hours. After pressure washing following stripping, I wire brush again as necessary. Proper surface preparation for painting is no easy or quick matter if its done right. Its all in how slick you want it to be. Good N-ing.

RM,

I have used Oven Cleaner with good results. If your goping to use it Easy Off Heavy Duty in he yellow can seems to work the best. Spray it opn leave it on a day and then pressure wash or scrape it off. You may have to repeat the procedure since it may not get all your layers of paint the first time. It is also messy.

What I prefer to use now is Airplane Paint Remover. I purchase this at my local auto parts store for about $4 a can, spray it on and watch it go to work. In about 10 minutes its ready to scrape or pressure wash. This stuff works a lot faster than oven cleaner and is just a bit more in price. I also think it does a better job. I highly recommend it.

Did you ever fix that stripped bolt hole below your govenor? I removed the govenor and the bracket or whatever it is called ( it was aluminum)and drilled then tapped it. Worked like a charm, no more leak. New engine rebuild is strooooong!
