What is the best way to clean out an old tank? It had about 3 gallons of varnish in it as it sat for the last few years. Should I use acetone or muratic acid? I'd like to get the rust out as well.

If rust isn't a problem and varnish is..... I took my carb cleaner and dumped it in the tank after draining the old gas. I let it sit for 2 or 3 days, drained it and rinsed it out. It works on carbs, it will work in tanks.

I used the POR-15 about 3 yrs ago. Just like Old George said. Looks like porcelain. It really works well.

Pat, POR-15 is the way to go. Mine was similar to yours with years of varnish and beginning to rust. Now the inside has a porcelain like finish. Click on the link below for more information. But don't believe me, check the archives. Hope this helps.

Just got mine back from the radiator shop. they boiled it out, fixed a pin hole then sealed the insides with some special goo. cost about $50. Also check the archives, some guys have had good luck with another type of tank sealer. My understanding is if you don't seal them they will rust again and in a year or two you will be back to where you are now.

I had great success with a product for cleaning/derusting/re-lining gas tanks. Go to www.eastwoodcompany.com and look through their catalog. HTH.

Ditto on the gas tank cleaner I did it three years ago on a 9N and haven't had a fuel problem since. It takes a while to do it right but it's worth it in the long run.
Good luck
Tom

My 800 sat for about 5 years, I took off the gas tank and used this fuel tank repair kit to clean it and seal it. Worked great for me.
