Well, I done it. Got the ol' 8N converted. Spent about three hours last night and about three today but its done. I had to put in my new gas tank anyway so I just took off the hood to do it. Made the brackets, not a tough job for anyone thinking about it, installed the alt. and rewired the whole thing. One odd thing That I came across while doing this was that the previous owner install those spark plug extenders to ward off oil fouling. It was really fuel fouling that was the problem, after a carb rebuild the problem went away. I also had to take them out to get the stock tank back in. So, I took out the plugs and extenders and put just the plugs back in. The darn thing would not start! so I chased out my new electric system, no problems. Checked the carb, plug wires and was ready to pull the distributor out. I had checked the spark but putting in a spare spark plug, but decided to just check the ones I had just reinstalled. All four electrodes had been bent up by the piston/valves. Apparently had the wrong plugs in it to accomodate the plug extenders. Fortunately no major damage to reciprocating parts. Off to the parts house for the right set of plugs in the mornin' and I'll be all done. I put the plug extenders back in to see if it runs after all my hard work and it starts, runs and charges like a champ. So, thanks for all good advice, great articles, wiring diagrams, and part numbers. Oh and thanks for D gas tank D Brow

Andy..... ..sounds like you had some "extended nose" sparkplugs and maybe a milled head. Since N-Engine is a flathead, and the sparkplugs are not over any moving parts like pistons, the only way you could have squashed your sparkplug gap is by not having enuff combustion chamber room and too long sparkie tips and screwing down on 'em.

Some extended nose sparkplugs are used to prevent fowling. Sounds like this was a case of 2 wrongs making a wright..... ...Dell
