After problems with 2 gears ingaged at the same time. I've pulled the trans cover and 1 and 3 gear are able to slide back and forth about a 1/4" I've split the tractor at the rear end and have pulled the bearing retaining, bearing cone, shaft bearing and thrust washer. these look ok but not sure. Where is the slack from it's almost like if I had 2 thrust washers there it would take the slack out. Do you have to spilt the trans at the engine also to remove the top main gear 1,3,2,4,?

Allen..... ...because you have to remove the input drive gear to get the mainshaft out with 1,2,3,4 gears on it. And while you've got the input driveshaft out, replace the front shaft seal. Obviously, you haven't been reading your I&T FO-4 repair manual. $29 cheep, gettcha 1 and readitt..... ..Dell
