I do not know a lot about the hyd. system on my 2n yet. I understand that the 8n has draft control, and the 9n & 2n do not. Can anyone explain what the control spring on the top of the 3 pt. hitch does? Mine seems to be frozen up, but the hyd. system works great. This tractor used to do lots of farm work, but in the last 20 years it has mostly been used to hog and pull with the draw bar. Thanks. My small site is www.erols.com/hpmt

Thanks for all your help! Ok i do not plan to try to adjust the spring, i am happy with it's adjustment. What i want to know is how far the link should be able to be pushed in and how hard should it be to push it in?

Patrick, the spring was designed to control the lift. If the draft-load compressed the spring, the linkage raised the lift arms, then lowered them automatically when the load decreased. The link should be adjusted to remove any looseness in the spring.

Pat..... ..all N's have draft control. The 8N has a little hydraulic selector knob under the seat that allows selection vertical for position control and horizontal for draft (plowing)

Your 2N does not have this position control, but the "Zane Thang" does provides a way to fake out your 2N's hydraulics into thinking it has position control. Highly recommend and quite reasonablely priced. Do a search for more info and testimonials..... ..Dell

Patrick, the archive question and great answer by Eric below should answer your question. Click below. This photo shows one thing that can happen with a mis adjusted spring.
third party image The plunger should be straight for proper operation. Trust me, they are not cheap. Hope this helps.

Thanks! My spring is trapped between the peices so that you can just turn it freely. I know for a fact that the adjustment is in the same place that it was when it left ford. So i should not have to worry about bending it? But it looks like i need to work at freeing it up. If the spring was not there could the rod be pushed in by hand?

Be careful to not use too much force when trying to turn the rod. I put a pipewrench on mine to try and turn it and the lift ended up not working. The force of trying to turn it caused a small pin on the control valve to break off. I had to pull the pump out and replace the part.
