8N Rope Seals

I have a question for the board regarding the rope seals for an 8N. I am in the process of putting my engine back together and within the complete engine gasket kit are 4 rope seals. 2 fat ones for the front of the crankshaft and 2 skinny ones for the rear of the crankshaft. All 4 seals in the kit have one end painted red.
Now my question.... My master parts book lists the rope seal part numbers as follows: 6700 as the front upper - green, 6701 as the rear upper - green, 6702 as the rear lower - red, 6707 as the front lower - red. All mine are painted on one end red... What is the difference and do I need to have 2 which are painted green? Any insight would be helpful.

This is a question that has been pondered by wise men from ages back.

What does the color mean on the rope seals????? ?

Maybe if we could go back to the Greek it would more clearly define the purpose of the colored rope seals?????

We may never know!

I have been installing them and pondering this question for over 40 years and I still have not come up with the answer????? Maybe if we could ask Henry????

Don't worry about it!

Ole,
When I did mine, both ends of each seal half were purple. Go figure. It may just be a different vendor thing. I don't know. Make sure you work them in the groove. I used a piece of 1 1/2" pipe to "roll" mine in. Trim the ends about an 1/8th of an inch long. You'll get a little pre-load squish when you bolt the caps on. Have fun.

Ole..... ...somewhere there is a N-Rebuild kit with 4 greenies???

Have you done an "archive" search? Specially for stuffin' instructions.

If'n I remember correctly, its getting the rope seal stuffed innna the slot more important than color.

Seems that many donna know what the color code means and they just stuff away. Those that stuff the most, have the least, (leaks)..... ..Dell
