I have a 49 model 8-N that still has the distributor on the front. I have a 12 volt battery with a voltage reducer going to the distributor. If I leave the switch on very long the reducer gets red hot. After checking the plugs I could get no spark. The points looked O.K. I had it running a few months back but it gradually began to run worse and worse until it wouldn't crank at all. Any ideas guys. I'm all ears. Thanks, Ron

Pardon my nosing in here, - I'm new on this post. I had a problem with great cranking but no fire to the plugs. New coil, points, condensor, cap, rotor, wires . . .

Two people I asked out of the blue both said to check the insulator and shim for the bolt that passes current through the side of the distributor. That was it.

Maybe it's so obvious to everyone that it's the first thing anyone checks. Just hope it helps.

You still have the distributor in front? How come you did not move it somewhere else? Ok. all seriousness aside. When you say "crank" what are you referring to? Cranking means to turn over the engine as in starting it. Do you mean run? Well anyway, what kind of coil do you have? 6 volts? Then you would need the voltage dropping resistor in series with the ballast resistor. I would expect it to get pretty hot when the points are closed and the engine is not runnig. Check the voltage on the points with the key on. It should be around 3.5 volts with the points closed and if they are open you would read the full battery voltage at the coil primary lead. The coil could have gone bad on you or the points could be shot.
You really need a voltmeter to troubleshoot this problem.

Sounds just like the problem I was having with my 8N. Replaced the "good looking" points and condenser with new ones. The thing cranks and runs as good as it ever did. By the way, I did not have a feeler guage for the gap, so I used the box top from the points as an estimate. Maybe I was just lucky. Hope this helps.
