What did I break this time...

Well, I totally drained my block/ radiator, and refilled it with a 50/ 50 anti freeze/ water mixture. I started it up, put it in reverse, dumped the clutch. I moved about a foot and it died. Started up again, moved another foot or so, (gotta learn not to dump the clutch), and died. Now it wont start. The starter spins, but it doesnt sound like it engages the engine. Now, when they converted to 12 volt, they have it fixed where you run a cable from the battery 'hot' to a screw on top of the distributor. If the cable is gone, it just spins like it does now. I think the cable must have gotten wet or something, but any ideas?

68 Mag,

You say it sounds like the starter spins but doesn't engage the flywheel. Look to see if the fan is turning while trying to crank it over. If the starter is spinning and the engine isn't my money is on the drive or flywheel. Pull the starter and inspect. My 12V conversions give the ole inertia drive a work out from rather harsh engagment. Also occasionally the drive sticks out and stays meshed in the flywheel teeth, rocking the tractor (as was mentioned) will help to let it release.

Nah, it's that home- made spoon. I knew I shouldnt have polished it. But seriously, if you (I) cant laugh at yourself, you (I) really cant laugh at much.

Still chuckling over that one,

I hope you did NOT mean literaly what you wrote,
"Now, when they converted to 12 volt, they have it fixed where you run a cable from the battery 'hot' to a screw on top of the distributor."
There BETTER be a switch between the battery and the distributor/coil, or else you will have the possibility of current flowing ALL the time thru the coil if the engine stops with the points closed, until you start the engine again, could be days, yes?!? - NOT GOOD!! PLEASE tell me that is not the case!

Worried,
Larry

Not a joke. This wiring system is....a joke, simply put. Dad says going back to 6 volt isnt allowed, so I guess I need to find a decent 12 volt conversion and do it instead of this mess...

There are good 12v wiring diagrams posted on someones web site. got CRS so can't remember who but if I had to make a guess the first choice would be Claus. Search the archives and you should find a referance to it.

Good luck,
Larry

Some times mine does that. and I put it in 3rd and rock it back and forth. I don't know if it does any thing but it works for me.

When I first bought my tractor it would do this... had a couple of bad spots on the flywheel ring gear. Replaced the gear and the problem was solved. It always happened at a bad time... and if I forgot to block up the blade I would need to disconnect to be able to rock the tractor enough to catch good teeth. Splitting the tractor and replacing the gear was surprizingly easy.
