Well, this morning, I went out, put it in 3rd, and rocked my 8N back and forth, hoping that I just had a bad spot on the gear. Still spins the starter, but it wont engage. Our Farmall did the same thing, until we replaced the bendix in the starter. Could that be the problem here, or do I need to replace my flywheel gear? If it's the gear, it wont be done for a while, because if I'm going to split the tractor, I may as well install my rebuild kit, which I havent gotten the money for yet. So, which is more probable? Bendix or gear?

and If You are taking yur starter out ,,, be sure to only pull it part of the way out, then ya have to put a 1\4 20 nut,,I think that is the size of the nut ,, any way the size nut that will go on the bolt that goes into the block thru the starter,, other wise like was stated the starter could come apart in yur hands,, also like was mentioned, go to the easy "fix first,, pull the starter and you should see what is up with it,, test it with your charger and see if the bendix engages, Just a word of advice ya may have to pull out that drain plug ya were ssking about the other day if it dont come straight out,, say a lil prayer before ya start takin it out,, I would say yur gonna have to curse a lil as it comes out but I dont want to taint yur young mind,, good luck,
Pat

Whenever you have a problem that could be caused by several conditions, always take the action which is the least expensive in terms of labor and parts. The sound may give you a clue as to what is the problem. A starter drive not engaging the flywheel will cause the starter motor to spin at a high rate do to the lack of load. If it engages the flywheel and the ring gear spins the sound should be different due to slower rotation of the starter. Of course the only way to tell for sure is to remove the starter and energize it to see if the gear moves towards the starter. Or you could take a screw driver and turn the ring gear and watch the fan to see if it turns as you rotate the ring gear. Once you bring the ring gear forward, you will need to spin the starter drive to bring it back to the original position. A wire brush on a grinder can do this for you..

Correct "Once you bring the ring gear forward" to read "Once the starter drive is in the forward position."

Why not take the starter off and inspect it and the ring gear? Just a suggestion.

Suggesting to a new to N's guy to remove the starter should always be accompanied with the warning "BE CAREFUL - the end of the starter will come off VERY easily!" Then getting it back together means "playing" with the brushes so they will allow the communtator to get past them. BTDT

I "fixed" mine so it would not do that again!! I took a drill and drilled thru the cover into the case - very carefully. then tapped the hole in the case - for 4-40 threads, I think. Then I drilled out the hole in cover to the clearance size for 4-40. I should to post a picture of it.

Regards,
Larry
