I was out looking at a '94 F350 Super Duty. 7.3 diesel, AT, duallys, 155,000 miles. Runs good needs cleaning. and some minor fixin. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these trucks and how long they last. I can pick it up for $2,000 and think it might be a good enough deal not to pass up. I need a truck and never had a diesel. Any opinions? Thanks.

If the body is good and the rest of the truck is not junk the value is there. I had a 1990 7.3 non turbo--good engine, good truck. HOWEVER! That engine, although non sleeved, is subject to cavitation and requires supplamental coolant additives. If the coolant system has not been maintained correctly you could have problems. The boys on the diesel board will tell you about this if'n you go there. There are a few of these 7.3s and 6.9s out there with coolant going into the pan due to cavitation of the cylinder walls. Also the E4OD transmission of that year is a problem if it has not been rebuilt with upgrades. The upgrades were incorporated in the factory builds in late 1995 I believe. I currently run a 1990 extended cab dually with the 460 gas. As old trucks they are hard to beat.

Only caveat I would tender is beware of the Mazda 5-speed if that is part of the deal. At the price you're quoting however, seems too good to be true.

FWIW -kb

Ricker, I've had a bunch of diesels from ford, VW, Dodge. My ford was fine, it was a 6.9 no turbo. It didn't get the milage of the turbos though. Is the one your gettin' a turbo? Turbo really helps the milage. The 6.9 350 Van I had got 10 to 12 mpg, my new 5.9 turbo cummings dodge gets 17 to 20 and wieghs in at 6500 lbs. I've had no`thin but luck with all my diesels. Still have an 84 VW over a hundred thou and never touched the motor. The 84 ford van went 150 when I sold it, and the guy is still driving it.

Ricker,
I would not let that one go!!! Up in northern states, that is a 5k truck if needing an overhaul.

There is a good website ford-diesel.com. I have found some very useful info there.

But if you are not interested in the truck share the wealth. I just bought me and 89 tired diesel, and does a world of difference over that in line 6cyl, that was in the 84. You know a man can never have to many vehicles. How would I explain that to the wife?? I have been trying for another tractor..

I just reread your message I did want to tell you that e4od trans after they put all that electronics stuff on it was not worth the trip to the scrap bin.

Oh well, Happy holidays to all.
Tom.

Hey Ricker, LOL I'd be concerned as to who the rightful owner is, 2 grand for this truck is a steal even if it needs alot of work, you could afford to replace a major component and still have a good deal, the miles on it is not a problem if it has been maintained, diesels typically run alot longer than this without any problems '94 was when they changed over to the powerstroke (later '94) I have an early '94 F-250 with a 7.3 and just a turbo while its not as peppy as a powerstroke it still does a very good job, I have had excellent service out of my truck, so I would take the better part of the mans arm with me when we shook on the deal LOL

Ricker..... .not too certain on Ford PowerStrokes, but heard that the're not reputed to be as longlived as Dodge Cummins. And at $2000 for a '94 1T dually, I'd might be suspissioius about a $5000 diesel o/h in the near future. Get yer pencil out and do some numbers. I'd go check into the ford diesel p/u board and ask there..... .Dell
