Picture this- A tractor, with 8N grill, 9N cast aluminum hood, 9N front wheels, an 8N engine, a 9N 3 speed transmission, and 2N steel rear wheels. Believe it or not, this thing is sitting right down the road from me. It's owner and I got a good laugh out of the paintjob. If it's a 9N or 2N part, it's 9N grey. If it's an 8N part, it's either 8N gray or red. What we want to know is, will an 8N Sherman Overdrive transmission it, due to the 8N engine, or should he hold out for a 9N?

Are you implying this tractor is available for sale? If so, and the price is reasonable, BUY IT. Then sell the hood to a 9N restorer and use the money to buy an original Non-Johnny Cash tractor.

No, not for sale. He uses it daily, and wants a Step Up. I was considering selling him the one out of my 8N, but it probably wouldnt fit...And then I would need a driveshaft or whatever...

There's a 9N that lives near me with an aluminum hood. Serial number 9N254. First words out of the owner's mouth when I asked if I could get a closer look at it: "It's not for sale!" Once I convinced him I had no money to spend anyway he was a really nice guy. Bought the thing used after he "got back from the war" in '45 or '46.

68 Mag..... ."What we want to know is, will an 8N Sherman Overdrive transmission it, due to the 8N engine, or should he hold out for a 9N?" Are you asking if'n a Sherman O/D tranny will fit your new friends "mixed parentage" 9N? Aluminum hood implys early 9N tranny.

Well, maybe.... heres the deal, any sherman aux tranny takes the place of the real tranny input shaft between the clutch disc and the tranny input gear. All N's tranny input shafts are the same. BUT....early 9N's tranny input gear was straight cut. (efficent but noisy) and sometime in late '40 or so (not too certain when) they changed the main tranny input gear to "helical cut" (more expensive but quieter).

Bottom line, until you visually examine both the main tranny input gear and the sherman output gear for compatability, you'll never know if'n they'll fit.

FYI...helical cut gear teeth go across the gear face on an angle and straight cut gears go straight across. It is quite obvious which is which when visually inspected..... .Dell

68 Mag..... ..I understand that your friends N-Tractor is a hybrid. And I'm saying, doesn't matter. The tranny input shaft from the clutch to the tranny is the same length, 9N, 2N, 8N..... .BUT...early 9N's had straight cut input gears and the Sherman's output gear (which mates with the tranny input gear) must match...straight to straight, angle to angle, and I'm not certain that any of the Sherman's had the straight cut gear. And that the only way I know to tell the difference is to visually inspect the gears in question, the difference is rather obvious ..... ..Dell

I think that the Sherman should work in the tractor, even though it seems to be a "Parts Bin" tractor. The engines are interchangeable between the 9-2-8N's.
