Two of my neighbours have Kubota 3 cyl diesel mini tractors. They swear by them. I can't speak for their longevity however. I used one fellows because it had a front end loader. It worked very well but I found tractor quite twisty with a load in the bucket. I think they are a little jealous of my 8N though ;^) ( another neighbour has a 48 N with a loader that I'm jealous of!) Others mentioned high mortality in the field but diesels IMO should get more oil changes if you want them to last the way they should, so there is some truth to the poor maintenence issue. tuK

the only one i had apart---- hahaha outa of 25 machines- that still run and never had apart, was a used machine that was purcased. had burnt pistons-- been overheated, lots! bad themostat was the cause. abuse anything it will fail. ron

My cousin and I were just talking about the 3 cyl. Kabuto diesel engines last week...he now works in a new division of his company and this is the engine they use to run refrigerant compressors in their products. Overall he is not too impressed. They are seeing almost a 25% rate of failure or serious problem in the field within the first three years on them. Kabuto says they are improving the product all the time and that the numbers are high because the engines are not properly maintained in the field. I am sure there is some truth to the mantenance part...but that seems like a horrid number of problems. Personally I wouldn't buy anything with one of these engines in it.

Someone on this board posted a story once that went like this.

While looking at a new Kubota to replace an old 9N, a salesman told the interested buyer that the tractor cost in excess of $18,000. Seeing his shock at the cost of the new import, the salesman explained that the Kubota was a 30 year tractor, implying it would last 30 years. Funny advice to a man who was using a 50+ year old Ford Tractor.

Well, while I have no direct experience with them, my uncle's father in law has a Kubota diesel tractor, and I know it's at least 10-15 years old, if that helps.
