Bought my 8n from a friend a while back. Lift did not work electrics were broke, didn't run, had an outboard motor gas tank, and on and on. Fixed the starter, free. Built brackets for the gas can, free. Rewired it, couple of bucks. Fixed the lift, couple of bucks for gaskets. New plugs, two or three bucks. New points, few bucks. I guess what I am trying to say is that these machines would rather run for you than not. However, you have to love machinery, I do, You have to love your tractor, I do, and you have to enjoy tinkering, again I do. If you don't like it get rid of it and find another hobby. If you con't have the money, get a job to get it. I worked in a chinese food place when I was 14. There are plenty of jobs out there for young people. FIND ONE. If you can't find one make your own. I pulled lots of weeds, fixed lots of cars and did lots of odd jobs to make the money I needed for cars and girls when I was younger. I am not that old now so don't think I am so far removed from this day and age were I don't know what I am talking about. Good luck with you starter, hope Santa brings you a rebuild kit and a manual for Christmas. P.S. When I was 16 Santa brought me 8 valves for X-Mas to help repair the head I had blown on my Fiat Spider. Best gift I ever had. It taught me to do it myself rather than depend on anyone else!

Actually, I've started again. I got the OK from dad to use the MIG welder to fix the floorboard, got the local parts guy willing to help me re-do the position control and starter, and have a couple of leads on job openings at the local tractor repair shop, as a gopher and such. Sure, I'll be lucky to make minimum wage, but heck. Getting paid to play with tractors is better than just having a broken one and waiting on someone to fix it for you.

Sounds like you are on the right track !

I got my 2N when I was 22 . I had never really worked on a tractor by myself before . I have learned a lot and made a lot of mistakes too . The one good thing is that I don't have to have my tractor for everyday use so I can take my time fixing it or getting advice on how to fix it . Learn all you can at work .

If you decide to repair tractors for a living , be sure that you keep up to date and learn about all of the new fangled electronics and such on the new models or you will be left behind and have a pretty short carreer .

You can make a good living at it depending on your location and if you are a GOOD mechanic . We have a lot around here that can't fix anything if there isn't a fix in "the book" .

Good Luck !

Now you are on the right track! Whatever happens, never, ever give up. The more curve balls life throws at you, the harder you need to work to hit them. Keep that in mind and you will always do well.

Good luck!

I agree, but even more important than asking questions is to listen to,and think about the answers.
