I was going to replace both front & rear tires on my 8N in the spring. If I was to replace the wheels with new aftermarket ones, would I have to use tubes? I have no intention of loading the tires.

I know it's more $$, but while you're going through the hassle of putting a tire on a rim, why not have the added security of a tube in the tire.

Ag tires have either tubeless or tube type construction and design. Tubeless tires have innerliner material that is impervious to air migration, thus allowing them to hold air. Tube type tires do not have this and while they may hold air for a while, eventually they will lose air. I can't speak to rim design for tube/tubeless.

Firestone does not make a tubeless tire in the 11.2 X 28 size. Others might. Firestone's 4.00 X 19 is tube type also. HTH Steve 8n 169302

When I replaced the rear rims on my TO20 Ferguson, I purchased a set of used 13.6-28 tires that had about 1/2 of the tread left. I mounted them tubeless and did some very heavy and abusive work with a box blade. It involved moving a lot of dirt and rocks, some which were quite large. There was a lot of stress put on the rear tires from the rocks and the fact that most of the dirt moving was up a fairly steep bank. The rear tires carried almost all of the weight of the tractor (the front wheels were light) as well as the pulling stress. I also did a lot of mowing and other jobs. After about a year one of the tires started leaking at the bead and when the tractor wasn't used for awhile the tire went down far enough so that it popped off of the rim. I had a hard time trying to get that wide tire to seat again so I installed a tube that I had left from the old tires. Now I have one each way. If the tires were new I wouldn't hesitate to go tubeless.

Arthur, I have two new FNH 11x28 rims and two Czech made tires and they are leaking slowly around the rim. I think the quality of tire has a lot to do with it. I am going to pump about two tubes of Massey tire sealer in each tire and see if that works. I used a John Deere with a big bat wing hog to cut thorns a couple years ago, and it had tubeless radial tires that were thorn proof. I don't know if they had sealer in them or not. I may have to un-seat the tires and apply some kind of sealer or install tubes. Front tires mounted tubeless with a tube of sealer in each one should never go flat. Some tri-rib tires cannot be mounted tubeless. Rims may not work as tubeless setups either, pin holes, etc.

When I purchased my turf tires last summer, the rep at Bauer Built recommended tubeless for and added degree of flat protection. Tractor tires are always getting abused, and a tube inside a tire adds a measure of redundancy. Older tires may have several severe cuts in them, but they still hold air because of the tubes.

I incorrectly said the Bauer Built rep recommended tubeless. He recommended TUBES! I hate it when my brain has a flat!
