I have a 41 9n that I took out tonight for snow plowing. When I first went to start it it wouldn't go. So since I knew there had been a little mixed two-stroke fuel in the tank when I ran out and had to get it into the garage a while ago, I figured I just needed to clean the plugs. I decided to stick the charger on the battery first and leave it on while I was cleaning the plugs So i pulled the first plug, cleaned it up and before i stuck it back into the head, I plugged it into the wire and rested it on the manifold, and then cranked the engine over while watching the plug for spark.
The thing hadn't cranked for 2 seconds and it fired right up running on 3 cylinders, no choke or anything.
So i shut it off put the spark plug back in and took off the charger, started her up again and went and did some snow plowing.

after that, I shut it off, went in for supper and came out again after. It wouldn't start no matter what i did - cleaned all the plugs, the cap and rotor, all the sparks were big and blue, I tried ether, block heater, and nothing worked.

What is going on?

Check for fuel, remember the things needed to run: Fuel, Spark, Air Flow, Compression, Proper Timing that's about it. If you don't have one or more it won't go. You said you put some mix fuel in was it the bottom of the can maybe water in the fuel? If it is real cold out you could have a froze needle valve or fuel line. Check for fuel in the bottom of the carb smell it or put it on somethig to look for water. Worst case put a little fuel (very little) in the plug hole (put plugs back in) and try it. Sounds like a fuel problem. Flush that old fuel out. You could have fowled the plugs with chain saw mix and they won't fire under compression but will fire when out. A spark is much harder to jump under Compression than not. Mark H.

Ya I tried gas through that plug (I have a little spray bottle that I always try to use before ether) , and as I mentioned, I later tried ether. Maybe it was flooded? Well tonight the battery will be totally charged and I'll plug in the block heater and cross my fingers.

BTW...- My battery hasn't been charging, last year when I painted my tractor I tested voltage output with a drill on the pulley shaft and got a decent reading (somewhere around 6 volts I think). Do I need to somehow polarize it? How do you polarize? Also what gauge wire should I be using?

thanks

if ya had your generator off or disconnected you will have to polorize it, it is still positive ground correct, if it is 6 volt it should be, you can jump a wire for a second or so from the "hot " side of starter.or cutout switch to the generator wire, it does not take that long to do it, ya should get a spark from the wire, the size of what wire are ya talking about, the jumper wire can be any size wire,, but the starter and battery cables should be the biggest ya can get,, 1 gauge , or 0 gauge work good, hope this helps.while your at it make sure all your wires and cables are clean, bright and tight,,and that thing will whirl.
