Oh no! Ferguson brakes on my 8n!

A few months ago, I asked the board members if anyone ever heard of mixing ford & ferguson parts because the brakes and rear axles on our recently purchased 8n don't match up with any ford manual diagrams. Well, I found the answer when paging through the I&T Ferguson manual. The brakes and rear axles are from a Ferguson TE-20. What do you think, leave them alone or secure salvage parts and restore to 8n originality? I'm leaning towards restoring to 8n, but I use the tractor less than 25 hours per year and probably will sell the tractor in 4-5 years.

Of course, you all know the story of how it got there. :-)

If your brakes are working or can be made to work with just some usual repair parts, you would be foolish to change it all back to original 8N issue, especially if you just plan use it for a few years and sell it.

I think field repairs when done well give a tractor personality. The spirit of the American Farmer! Of course if the spirit is added with a welder, then scratch the above statement! We just call those kind of repairs....farmerized!

If the brakes are lousy, switch it back, but if the setup is good, just leave it alone....but maybe put a note for your ancestors so they know where to get parts....

Take Care
Steve

8N,
Are you having any operational problems with the set-up? If not, I vote to let sleeping dogs sleep. Unless of course you have extra time and money and you are bored. JMO.

Brakes are soft. First, I need to replace axle seals and/or reduce rear-end fluid to 4 gallons, instead of 5. Also, the brake shoes should be replaced because the lining is down to the rivets. Which brings up another problem. I contacted several local brake shops, but no one re-lines shoes anymore, so I need to find te-20 shoes. Thanks for your responses.

My Ford / N H dealer got replacement shoes for my TE20 a few years ago. Two day service and not too bad of a price. The MF dealer was close in price but said 10 to 14 days.

You got a phone number for your dealer? Maybe if I call, they can ship a set to me. We don't have a nearby ford/nh or massey dealer. Happy New Year!
