I was thinking about using one in my 51 8N for the hydraulics.

Is it ok to plug one in and leave it on?...would leaving it plugged in all the time in the winter do any damage to the hydraulic fluid?

Thanks.

I have found that dipstick heaters tend to heat only the oil / fluid close to it and not cause enough circulation the avoid burning especially if left on for a long time. I have gone with the magnetic heaters that I can apply lower on the unit and create more circulation as the heated fluid moves up. Also since these are lower wattage I can use them over a longer time especially when used with a timer.

The only "crutch" I use to get my two six volt 8N's through Montana winters is a dip stick heater in the three point. The major reason for that is that if I remember to plug it in the night before I can hop on; fire it up; and go plow snow instead of waiting five or ten minutes for the lube to get with the program.

I've never tried leaving it plugged in [Montana Power gets enough of my money] and the one time I left it plugged in over the weekend the hydralic fluid had a burned smell so I changed it out.

Maybe somebody else has left it plugged in longer and can help you on that one but I wouldn't do it.

Your mileage may vary

There was a post or two about that just in the last couple of days. Try a search of the forum. Type "dipstick heater" and see what you get. You might try the archives too. I'll think you'll find people deciding not to use heaters in the engine because the oil burns on 'em. But that's not really on topic.
There is a recommendation to use the heater in the tranny but I can't remember who made it. Try the search.
