A friend became the proud owner of an 8N and I am helping him. We got it started with a new battery but the ampmeter shows a negative charge. Do we need to polarize the generator or something else. thanks in advance. a truly great forum. "poor" Rich in Nebr

First if it is still six volts the positive cable is to ground. If you put the battery in backwards with negative ground 6 volts that is the reason it is showing discharge. Turn it around and see if it will show a positive charge now. If not it may be necessary to polarize the generator.

Look into the archives to polarize your particular generator.

Richard,

When your friend first turns the ignition on, does the ampmeter move to the positive or negative side? If it moves to the positive, the wires on the back of the ampmeter are reversed. If it moves to the negative, he has other problems.

Without a little more information about the charging system on this 8N I hesitate to venture a guess. If you start swaping wires around you will likely burn something which might not have been the problem in the first place. At a minimum could you tell us:

1) six or twelve volt
2) generator or alternator--yes Virginia there are six volt alternators and twelve volt generators
3) positive or negative ground
4) how much discharge does the ammeter read and does it vary with engine speed

with that info somebody here can sort it out

Your mileage may vary

I had the same thing happen on a 52 dodge car. The former owner had the battery cables mixed up. I changed them around( + gnd. ) and amp meter worked fine.
