OK guys will try again. A friend has an 8N 6volt
He pur in an 8 volt Battery Positive ground and Negative hot. When he turns on the key the needle goes to Negative charge. When he starts it up the needle bounces on the negative side. Do we need to polarize it??? If so how??? I know we had to sometimes plarize a generator on the old truck when we put on a new gen or voltage reg. Also how much voltage reducer will he need so as not to hurt the points.???Thanks for the best board on the net.

Putting in the 8 Volt battery was the first mistake and it went down hill from there.. Read some of the fiascos in the archives about 8 volt batteries. Put the 6 volt back in....

Make all the connections between the battery and the generator. If only a cutout relay is used in the system, use a jumper lead to make a momentary connection between the batt terminal of the cutout relay or batt terminal of starter switch and the "A" (armature) terminal of the generator. When a vibrating external regulator is used in the system, make a momentary connection between the "BAT" terminal and "GEN" terminal of regulator.
BTW, if you switch the wires on the back of the ammeter the meter will read the other way.

Richard,

Putting in an 8 volt battery is only a temporary fix. Without increasing the generator output, the 8 volt battery will eventually only have 6 volts in it.

I agree with Scott that your friend needs to fix the problem with the 6 volt system. Start by checking all electrical connection and make sure they are "clean, bright, and tight" (as Dell would say). Also check for frayed wires. Next check the battery cables. Regular automotive cables (like the ones from Wal Mart) are not heavy enough for 6 volt systems. I would recommend 0 guage cables from an auto part house.

As far as polorizing the generator, search the archives at the top of the page for that. Off hand, I don't remember how to do it.

Danny

The generator will only charge a 6 volt you can try to bend the points on the regulator sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. If it turned over too slow why didn't he try to fix what's causing it?
