Just got news here in Syracuse NY that it looks like we are going to have the largest Shopping Mall in in the Western Hemisphere....4.6 Million Square Feet...that is big.

It's been a hot topic around town and been fun to listen people debate it all.

Personally I am in favor of it even though I will probably avoid it for the most part.

Rumor has it that the Largest Bass Pro Shop ever built is scheduled to come in the new Mall...That will be fine with me if it happens.

Here is a news tid bit that came out tonight.

(1/2/01 8:05 pm)The Onondaga County Legislature has just approved more tax breaks for the Pyramid Companies plan to turn the Carousel Center into "DestiNY USA." All that's needed now is the approval of the Syracuse Common Council. The plan allows Pyramid to get tax incentives for building thousands of new hotel rooms not included in tax breaks approved last year. Earlier today, lawmakers passed a plan designating the construction site for “DestiNY USA” as an Empire Zone, qualifying it for tax breaks. Pyramid’s plan for “DestiNY USA” involves turning the existing Carousel Center into a 4.6 million square-foot retail and resort complex. The company promises thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars for the local economy if the entire project is completed.

Here's my 2 cents worth

I have noticed that the big malls come and then they fade. We got a new mall, Nothing like your getting but new. At first everyone had to go and buy there stuff at THAT mall. Now the Mall walkers have taken it over. The upper level has more empty shops than anything else.

Kinda like When a Wal-Mart Super Center shows up just out side of the city limits. Every one goes to the super center, and the privately owned shops close one by one. The price of wages goes down because your working for the big corprate company in stead of yourself. People wonder why the little man can't make it anymore.

Just like the Big Dogs have done to farming. If you don't own 1000 acres you can't survive. If you rasing hogs, growing soybeans or just about any thing else. There's no money for the little man.

One final thought, with the mega mall, how is the roads and highways? If there messed up now, wait till you put the Mega mall and don't forget how many acres of parking lots. Interance ramps, exit ramps. Not to mention how many Months or Years of road construction will there be? Better get use to the Orange barrels setting every where.

Good Luck with your new Mall

The town was closed on Sunday and people actually survived! Families had a day when they could actually be, well families. If you needed something, you got it on Saturday or waited till Monday. Then the malls came and Sunday became just another work day for many. I vote we close everything on Sunday again.:-)

Been by there when I have been out visiting my sister and dave#1. It is big. But malls are malls are malls.

I live near Detroit and at Dundee towards Toledo, OH, they built a new Cabela's. Now there is a toy store!! Complete with acquariums, mountains, and steams. If you can get to one of these--you must see them. Wow. Only one place better, and that is the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.
IMHO

Who wants a bigger new shopping mall? And I doubt Johnny Morris would build a Bass Pro bigger than the world headquarters in Springfield!

Sal, I'm surprised you are getting all excited about a giant concrete jungle! You know those places seem to muck up nice land and end up being hang outs for all the juveniles. Do they plan on having a N store in it? I think we have enough mega malls! FWIW

Well, they are building it far enough away from me so it won't impact my driving times.

Also, it's being built on some of the nastiest commercial property around...It's former "oil city" transfer//storage property...Just cleaning up the toxic mess is a plus.

On top of that, there is absolutely no investment of any kind in my County and this will bring a lot of construction jobs to the area.

Plus, there will be more sales tax revenue and lower airfares and such.

I know there are negatives to all of this too. But there isn't much of an opportunity to stop this. Since it's cleaning up some useless land and going to generate construction jobs for several years and adding to the sales tax revenues of the county it's not all bad...but I sure am glad I don't lie near it!

Like I said...it isn't anywheres near me and I don't go in that area or close to it.
