Just can't part with the Whimpster 9N. Think I'll stuff that thought further back into the grey matter and bury it.

In fact, I wonder at times if there is any grey matter at all between the ears :)

Think I'll continue on with her perhaps sell the 850 in time, buy a finish mower for the 9N, and someday, when this board slacks off a bit, I'll do a complete tear down and rebuild engine overhaul and ask just a couple of questions. I promise, just one or two questions (yeah right).

It was the history of this tractor with this board, having a gut feeling that I would regret selling the Whimpster and the El Camino load of some very homely guys (I'm being kind here) that was the last straw. Some friends are best an arms' length away...or, halway around the country a keyboard away

:)

I think the Cub idea is a no go. Too light, too small, and sounds like nothing fits them.

Wouldn't be surprised if I hang on to the 850 too. Front loaders and backhoes are handy...if not interesting to look at.

Thanks for the insights and thoughts.

9N'er,

If storage is an issue you can store it down here. Just imagine, summer camp in maine for the 850. We could work on the rock wall for a few weeks. Plant some apple trees, some pine trees. Dig up some old stumps. Dig up some rocks that keep catching the bush hog.... Plenty of "fun" activitys.

All this only an hour away.

I don't want to rile anybody and I don't want to wear out my welcome. You've all been very accomodating to me even though I'm not (yet) an N owner. I have an 850 and I have to say that I would only sell it if I had a chance to replace it with an 860 (live pto). I sure wouldn't sell it so I could by a 9N. It's just too useful to have the extra power and live hydraulics. Of course I use mine to cut and bale a small amount of hay. Now if I had a chance to get a 9N in addition to my 850 I'd do it. And if I had a 9N as nice as the Whimpster I'd never sell it. And if it looked that nice because of the work I myself put into it the only way it would leave my possession is upon my death I would will it to my son.

but, haven't found a need for live PTO either...

And, to be honest, having a "Lumpy Lookalike" is kind of fun.

Try baling hay a couple of times and you'll see the value of live pto! Would sure be nice to keep the baler going while I feather the clutch to get through a large clump of hay. I guess if I was better at raking it into uniform windrows I wouldn't have any trouble. Practice, practice, practice!

I just read everyones posts below, and I think you've come to the right conclusion. You put yourself through a lot with the whimpster, and you'd regret selling it.

I have a 2N, and while I keep telling myself another tractor would be nice, with my 3-point bucket, I really can't justify owning another. I use my 9N with a 6 foot finish mower, 5 foot hog, backblade for plowing, scoop, trailer, and it is just the ticket. I know a lot of people think a loader is the handiest thing, but to be honest, a 3-point scoop is almost as handy for landscaping projects, plus a small tractor like an N will steer better with it. Plus the light weight won't dig up your yard.

So I'd gt rid of the 850. You'll miss it from time to time, but you can rent one of those those little Terramite backhoes for big diging projects for a weekend, and you'll be happier, and of course cost of ownership on these tractors isn't cheap.

Besides, one of these days I was planning on seeing the Whimpster in person.....

Take Care
Steve

It was the homely, forlorn, ugly, grotesque and downright ornery group of men that would show up in an El Camino with a ladder rack. I'd rather take a beating with a baseball bat than be subjected to cold stares from a group of men like that. Hey, BTW, how much do you want for the ladder rack? LOL 9N'er

Your "shock therapy" treatment was a SUCCESS!
The patent seems to be completely cured from
his bout of insanity! :-)

Trying to think logically about ones toys.. er.. TOOLS will cause a man to have these lapses into insanity. A REAL man never sells or gets rid of his TOOLS. Only a woman would think that selling a useful tool was OK. And even though a tool is not needed at the present moment, there is ALWAYS the possiblity of a need later. Remember, you need the RIGHT tool for every job!

Glad to hear of your cure, 9N'er.

You didn't mention you had made the mistake of actually verbalizing these wild thoughts in front of the money czar! Maybe you are in trouble after all. Will it be hard to convince her you weren't really making a promise?
