I am the new owner of an 8N. I need a little help with changing the oil, both engine and hydraulic. I am confused by all the drain plugs on the belly. Which one is which? Where do I check the level of the hydraulic fluid? Where do I find replacement oil filters?

I am also trying to locate a replacement for the dust cover(rubber boot) at the bottom of the shift lever. I have searched several web sites with no luck. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rodney..... ...There are 3 tranny/hydro drains and one fill'em up by the tranny shifter. Drain the differnential first, its a small plug and peees innna bucket with some accuracy. then drain the 2" hydropump and the 2" tranny plug. Do it in that sequence and you won't have oil all over the floor. (don't ask)

Fill with 5 gals of Ford/New Holland recommended spec: M2C-143D hydro/tranny oil. 'course ya could use the 1939 spec 90wt mineral oil if'n ya can find it. It is NOT 90wt GEAR oil. I use M2C-134D and find no problem with it in my eazy starting 6 volt '52 8N..... ..Dell

You should be able to get the shifter boot locally. Dell says to warm the boot in boiling water to make it stretch over everything and a tye-wrap may keep it on there. Try a farm supply store like Tractor Supply or such. They have the 134 spec fluid and the oil filter maybe. They will have lots of other parts too. Points, gaskets, screens, seat, bumper, muffler, steering wheel, lights, and on and on. Wouldn't hurt or cost much to have an extra set of plugs too. Light weight oil in the crankcase this time of year.

I have another question. I'm sure I'll have hundreds as time goes by. I can't locate the serial number. I saw the picture on your web site, but I checked there and found nothing. Unless it is well hiddend behind the manifolds, it's not there. I did find a number on the housing where the starter mounts that says "8N-C". Any suggestions where the number might be?

It is on the side oopposite the manifold(sitting in the tractor seat, it's the left-hand side). Find the oil filter then look behind it in the general area where the head bolts to the block. There should be a flat place about 2.5" long where some numbers should be stamped.

I also need a suggestion on specs for hydraulic oil. What weight oil is recommended?

Thanks,

Just go to your local New Holland dealer and get # 134 hydraulic/trans. oil which is a 10W30 weight. When the tractor was new they had 90 weight mineral oil (NOT GEAR OIL) but with additives it can be this light now. Your tractor holds 5 gallons unless there is alot of buildup in the bottom then only 4 1/2 gallons. The drain plug gaskets, filter, and rubber boot are also in stock at the dealer.
