Searched the archives didnt find my answer.Used 2n all summer long to mow grass lift worked great. I havnt used tracter in 6 weeks, went out to put blade on and wouldnt lift at all.Its been pretty cold 20s for a week. Checked hyd. level and low and milky. So i removed hyd.plug and about a cup of water comes out then 2 gal.milky oil. so i let drain for an hour then refilled with 4.5 gal.with proper fluid. it was a little overfull wouldnt take 5. I drove tracter around for an hour hoping it was still froze and didnt help, even used a space heater ,still you can lift arms they fall to the ground. That water has me thinkin that it froze and broke something zane or anyone else know what ive done?

These old ns are tough ,If was mine I would park it in a heated garage overnight , drain all 3 plugs. ( plug in rearend first ) .Replace with 4.9 gallon of 80 90 wght ( or fluid of of your choice ) That rubber boot should be replaced to keep the water out. Boil it in water so it will be easer to slip on.If this doesnt help , you have other problems .

Can't really comment on whats wrong, but I replaced my ma's 8n shifter boot over xmas. I searched the archives, tried all suggestions. what worked for me was to slide it over knob w/just a little soap. Turn it inside out and push/roll it down. Get bottom band started. Slide a 1/4" box end wrench up under bottom band and twist it down. The hardest part was getting the bottom band started and keeping my fingers warm (15 degrees).

Just went through the exact same thing with my 2N a week ago. Mine worked Good untill it got down into the teens. Then it lifted and wouldn't go back down.
I brought it into my neighbors heated garage and left it overnight.
Then in the morning I drained everything, pulled off all the inspection covers, pto and dropped the hyd. pump out of the bottom, reached inside with rags and cleaned all the gunk out of the bottom.
Replaced everything and filled it back up with oil. Solved the problem! Also make sure you have a good rubber boot on the shift lever so it won't happen again.
Wasn't too bad. Took about 3 1/2 hours. And I'd never been into it before.
