I recently flipped my 49 8N, don't ask, and had to change some fluids that ran out all over the place. While I was doing that, I decided to give her a full tune up, plugs, points, everything. The radiator also had to be replaced and the hood and fenders need to be also-$$OUCH. Once I was finished with the tune up, it started right up but was blowing white smoke. I only let it run a couple of minutes and it did not seem to lessen. Question, should I just let it run for a while and see if it stops? It never smoked much on startup before this, but has been sitting for c ouple of months. I have not checked compression or for any leaks yet. I did not want to run it too long if that is what I shouldn't do. Thanks.

Blew a head gasket in my tbird a couple of months ago. The compression was within spec but clearly lower than the other cylinders. The plug had drops of moisture on it. The gasket was clearly blown when I saw it. The metal put a big nick in the top of the piston.
I repaired it, it went together really nice, and started the car and the smoke was just as heavy! Guy on the tbird site said he's seen it take 30 minutes to clear up. So I idled the car for 15-20 minutes before the smoke was noticably thinner! Sure nuf after 30 minutes it was very light and I drove it for 4 miles and it has been fine since.
Don't really know how or even if you could get water in the cylinder without having broke something but I guess anything is possible if you turn the tractor upside-down and shake it!
If you did get water in there and nothing is broke it may take awhile for the smoke to clear.

Steamey, white exhaust smoke is more noticeable innna the winnner time. Kant figger out why (grin). Ya mights getts lucky and stoppit by re-torqueing your cylinderhead bolts to 65 ft/lbs. Pull yer sparkies and look. If'n yer been burrning anti-freeze, ya'll been steamcleaning the sparkie insulater blindingly white. 'course, as you've alreaddy acknowledged, compression check will conferm at least partly ablown headgasket. Cracked cylinderhead is also a possibility. BUT atleast go lookin and doo sumptin before its too late..... ..Dell
