Hey guys,
I am getting ready to purchase a 8N Ford. I am going to use it to cut grass. I was wondering if I should buy a 5ft or 6ft finishing mower? What do you guys think?
Thanks.

If your tractor is in average to good condition it should handle the 6' mower with no problems. I have a long uphill grade that I finish mow and I have no trouble with 2nd gear on my 2N. Keep the tractor tuned and the blades sharp.

I have a CT 6' mower, when I bought it my tractor was in need of a complete engine rebuild, it was very weak but still was able to cut grass with no problems. My N dosen't bog's down from the grass being to tall or to wet, I'll smoke the belt right off the mower before stalling it. If your tractor bog's down you might want to check out your govener, it might need adjusting or a rebuild.

Rick, I have a Woods RM600 and my 8N's handle it very well. My yard is (was) tall fescue a course bladed grass. I keep the height at about 3 inches. Normally, if I don't get behind, I can mow in third gear. Sometimes, if it got ahaead of me, I mow in second. Don't forget the ORC and you may have to shorten the pto shaft on the mower. I made some new brackets that backed the mower away about an inch and didn't have to shorten the shaft.
One caution, among many. My normal 8N was down and I used the one with the loader (steering by armstrong). In a lapse of attention I was looking back at the mower to miss a post and the loader was low enough to take out about 8 feet of my deck rail. OOPS!

I destroyed my truck topper with my front end loader making an ill-advised spin turn while mowing!!
ah well money does grow on trees...

It kind of hurts the pride along with the wallet but out of disaster hopefully something good arises. I redesigned the railing and installed some hand rails going down 5 steps to the back yard. Wife not so critical about accident afterwards.

I have a RM500 and I have a few questions for you about the Woods mower behind an N. If you could send me an e-mail I would appreciate it. You mentioned mounting it farther back and I would like to know the details on this. Mine has the optional front wheels and they are way too close to the rear tractor tires.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken, an RM600 only has two wheels in back. The front is supported in the mow position by two chains attached at the top link on the tractor. The lift arms are attached to pins in a flat plate that piviots on bolts on the mower. I made the plates out of a wider stock and moved the pin location forward, effectively moving the mower rearward. I don't have a photo or drawings. Hope that helps.

I have a 6 foot finish mower on my 8N. Looks just like the one in on Tylers tractor. It works pretty good, however my tractor has been through a complete rebuild and runs strong. But in real deep grass it bogs down the rpm a fair amount and I have to take a smaller swath to get the rpm up to cut better. I also keep the blades sharp all the time with a 4" hand grinder. But my advice would be to buy the 5 foot one so you don't have the concerns I have with managing the rpm by controlling the width of my cut. The 8N only has about 25 horse power so I think a 6 footer is a bit too wide. This also has been my experience. But I bought my 6 footer because it was returned by another 8N owner who said it was too big for his tractor to handle well and bought a 5 footer instead, so I got a real good buy on a nearly new 6 footer. I felt that with my new rebuild that my tractor would handle it OK. And it does, if I don't let the grass get too high, and if it is too high I raise the mower a bit, or take a smaller swath. Alot of times this is a pain. I also have a new brushhog that cuts any highth of grass easily. So the bottom line is, I say, use your head and buy a 5 footer, don't follow the testosterone and buy the 6 footer.

Good luck mowing. Also, I suggest strongly that you buy one like Tylers with the four large wheels, one on each corner, instead of ones that only have two on the rear. Also, the central gear box with the two belts is an excellent design.

Dave#1 stacked a 1/2 kegger of Coors Light on top of it and "she couldn't take much more, Cap'n".

I'll let dave#1 tell you the real story of how the bumper got bent, how the right rear fender got beat up, and how the right headlamp got busted up.

LOL,
Tyman

Well ya see Sal, last summer when Tyman came up, he sat on the damn thing and bent it !!
LOL

Na..... what really happened is the wife tried to go 4 wheeling with her Caravan and got it stuck in the back yard, at the time I was in a "piss poor" mood so I tried and did pull it out with my 8n with a chain hooked to the front bumper of the tractor ! Got it out !
LOL
