Completed installing new points, plugs, coil, resistors and side marker lamp for my 6 to 12 volt conversion. 8N started right up with a jump, but marker lamp did not go off and once battery cables were disconnected tractor died. Ran the tractor for about 30 minutes and this still happened. Does this mean the alternator is bad? Battery is brand new. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I meant that once the jumper cables were removed the tractor dies. Thanks.

STW, Make sure your "New" Battery has the -ve (Neg)
post connected to ground (Tractor Frame), if you have it with the + pos ground your Alt will be toast. Disconnect Your Alt and get your tractor running correctly and then reconnect Alt.

Hope this Helps

What do you mean "once the battery cables were disconnected" Are you disconnecting the battery while it is running? If I am not mistaken, you need a battery in the circuit for an alternator to work.

You need a battery to get the field going in an altinator. Once the altinator runs, you no longer need the battery. As a matter of fact, we used to use this as a test to see if the altinator is putting out... Disconnect one side of the battery, and put on the headlights for current draw... The car should not die.. This was in the days when we could not afford the proper test equipment.

Claus: Then why does the tractor die when I remove the jumper cables?

Thanks.
