Bearing Retainer Gasket

Reviewing the FO4 and Master Parts manuals, the clutch side bearing retainers for the transmission mainshaft and the countershaft for my 49 8N are installed each with a fiber(paper) gasket. Since my tractor is already split for a new clutch and mainshaft seal, should I also replace these $0.30 gaskets? I think the mainshaft retainer gasket should be a piece of cake but I am not sure about the countershaft retainer. Can I just remove the 4 bolts holding this retainer on and renew the gasket or will the countershaft fall and prevent me from reinstalling the retainer? I recall lots of discussions centering around the mainshaft seal but I found nothing on the retainer gaskets. Any insight would be helpfull.
Thanks

Well since you suggested it and my motors out, I guess I better plan on that too. I do have a little gunk in the bellhousing! Please E-mail me if everything falls apart or works good.

Thanks,
Ken

Ole..... ..its generally a good practice anytime you disturb a gasket to replace it. Prevents callbacks. 'course if'n ypu are your own warrentee station, whats it worth to you to not haffta go back and redo it? 30 cents, bettcha its worth it to me..... ..Dell

Dell.....thanks for the insight. My thoughts also! I have ordered a new retainer gasket for the mainshaft. Still don't know about the countershaft retainer. Not sure if this a possible source of leaking due to the massive amounts of gunk I had to deal with. Have you ever heard of fluid leaks from the bearing retainers? If I pull the countershaft retainer, will the countershaft drop preventing me from reinstalling the retainer? Thanks for your help.
