I am getting conflicting resource information on the painting requirements on 8N distributors. One source indicates the distributor is left unpainted and another indicates that it is painted red. Does anyone know the red hard truth?

The picture on page 128 in the book titled Ford Farm Tractors by Randy Leffingwell shows a 9N going down the chain getting a heavy dose of final paint with the dist. covered by a masking cloth and the spark plug wire tube not installed..... .....this leads me to believe that the dist might be installed but covered by the mask and the cap ,rotor ,wires and tube installed after the final paint was applied. This only applies to the 9N as I have not seen any pics of the 8N production line...All of this fine attention to detail reminds me of the Corvette restoration scene where every mark and detail is worth X`s of points....you know chalk marks on the frame and other stuff only known to the people who actually made them....For the 8N`s that I restore I am gonna put them together minus the sheetmetal and electrical shoot e`m red ..... ..... ..... .....Big Mike

I certainly hope that people such as those in the Corvette circles (whom by the way Are years behind the Mustang freaks as far as attention to frivilous details) never invade the likes of the N restorers and owners. These are farm tractors, made for farmers and should be restored or kept original as to the likings of each tractors ouner, not by some wealthy and/or overzealous "saw one once that had a ___" group that mandates all new restorations will be judged by and have to have that attitude. I have never seen a concours event that invited Ford Tractors and I know that in my lifetime I never will. I even dread the day that some group might have points judging for tractors. Lets keep owning Ford N's affordable and fun!!!

Well said, Gaspump. I hope no tractor show I go to ever brings in judging. I do think, however, that many of us, as a matter of personal pride will try to come as close to original as possible. I ask and answer questions with this in mind. There are some cases where personal preference over-rules originality. That's why we own these tractors instead of renting...so they can be our way!

Ole are you related to Willard? No distributers were not painted on the assembly line, in fact they were not even installed yet.
