8N Transmission/rear end trouble

This post falls into the "how bad is it?" category. The other day I was working in the woods skidding some logs with my 1952 8N. At some point (very near the end of my work) I had managed to get both wheels
spinning. When I went to back out of the hole I had dug, the tractor wouldn't back up, nor would it go forward in any gear. In fact, once I got it towed out of the
woods, I found that the tractor acts as if it is in neutral regardless of the gear selected. The shifting mechanism appears to work (I don't believe the problem is a
slipped or worn fork in the main transmission) and the only visible external symptom I can find is that the PTO/hydraulic selector appears to be disconnected, in
that it just flops to the back (engaged) position and will not stay forward in the disengaged position.
Any ideas on what I may have wrecked would be appreciated.

Until you threw in the PTO issue I was going to say could be as simple as you tore up a clutch disc. With the PTO housing being the support for the transmission countershaft rear bearing sounds more like some transmission internal failure. The only way you are going to know it to dive in.

Your mileage may vary
