After the previous posts, I don't know if ya'll are ready for this. I have a Jubilee that has not run in 5 or 6 years. I had the generator rebuilt, but it isn't installed yet. I connected a newly charged battery and tried starting it. I was trying to determine if the starter was ok or not. All that I got was a clicking noise from the solenoid. Should the starter have engaged? If it should have, what do I do next? If it isn't supposed to engage, how do I check it out to see that it is in good working condition. What would you fellas do??
TIA, Oslo, NC

You may want to take the starter down to the shop that rebuilt your generator. It would take them about two shakes to put it on the bench and test it.

Make sure that the tractor is out of gear before you jump around the solenoid. Bob

Try tapping on the solenoid with a small hammer while cranking, If that don't produce results try jumping accross the large terminals on the solenoid if it cranks the engine replace the solenoid, if all that you get is a big spark you got starter problems or your engine is frose.
P.S. don't let the jumper get welded to the starter terminals touch it to the term quickly, observe results and yank it off. Be warned that even if the starter is good there will still be a pretty good spark when doing this.
Good luck Jim K

I took the starter off, used all of the positions I could(tongue) still no good. I had to remove the oil filter. It came right out. I took the starter to the shop. This repair guy is very nice and seems to know his stuff. He looks honest but that hasn't anything to do with his making a buck. I thought if he charged over $126.00 I would consider looking elsewhere. He must have read my mind. He wanted $125.00. So, there I was. Decision time. He tried to turn the shaft by hand and it was stuck, solid. He asked me how long ago I had taken the starter off. I said yesterday, why? He said everything was rusted inside. I said for him to look at the strap that covers the holes on the front of the starter. I told him it had a rust hole in it from sitting outside for so many years. You couldn't see it unless you removed it. The hole was on the bottom out of sight. So, fellas in'n you leave your n outside or have it in an area that is damp, then you had better check that strap for rust. A two dollar strap cost me $125.00. I decided to let him rebuild it with the clutch thing. Sorry about the long post. Oslo in NC
