Jim, I did as you and Rob and Bob suggested. Tapped on the solenoid, nothing, I still get the clicking sound from the solenoid when the starter is pushed. I jumped from the negative wire going to the sol. and connected to the terminal that leads to the starter. Nothing, no start nor any spark. But, yet, the solenoid clicks. The bat. is new and has a full charge. Plenty of spark across the bat terms. Are there any other wires that need to be connected to make the spark. I was only puzzeled before, now I am completely baffled. What's next??

Get a pair of jumper cables and a 12 volt battery. Connect one side of the battery to the frame of the tractor (Polarity does not matter) Connect the other cable to the other post on the battery and touch the end of the cable to the electrical terminal on the starter. If you do not get a spark when you do this, then your starter is open as previously suggested. If you get a spark but it does not turn over, then the bendix is jammed or the engine will not turn. If all is well, then the engine should crank.
Happy Motoring

The comments that I'm hearing are with merit (starter jambed or engine locked or siezed) however; if I understand correctly - you have shorted electrically across the two large posts of the solenoid and get "no sparks, nothing".

This indicates that the starter motor is open internally (if there is a good electrical connection to the starter itself with your shorting tool(s).

But if you read his post closely he jumped from the negative terminal of the solenoid to the starter terminal, this could be the key to no sparks here.

Don,

And, if read my response correctly I indicated what he should be doing.

Kind regards,

Larry

Sorry about that Larry and Oslo, I could have said what I wanted to say in a much nicer way.
Thanks for the reply,
Don

Oslo,

In your first post you said that the tractor had not run for 5 or 6 years. Are you sure the engine will turn over? Try removing the plugs and see if you can turn it over by hand. It may not be a starter problem.

The bendix could be jammed up to the ring gear.

Hello Oslo,

I hope I'm not going to insult your intelligence; however many folks don't understand the solenoid.

The small wire attached to the solenoid when activated by the starter button energizes the internal winding in the solenoid causing a mechanical connection of the two large posts on the solenoid's sides. The "click" that you hear is this electro-magnetic "switch" connecting these two posts.

These two posts, one from the battery and the other to the starter(when the solenoid is energized) complete the circuit from the battery to the starter motor.

Some times, even though the solenoid "clicks" the internal contacts inside the solenoid are burned and the high-amperage circuit to the starter cannot be completed.

By shorting "around" the solenoid (with two screwdrivers)on the two LARGE posts - the starter should operate. If it does - the solenoid is bad. If the started doesn't operate - then the starter motor is bad.

Pretty simple. Make certain the tractor is out of gear when shorting the large posts.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Oslo I think you missunderstood me I meant to jump accross the two large terminals and use some heavy wire like jumper cables.
Claus also has a good sugestion.
Good luck Jim K
